Addressing common behavior problems in young children with and without disabilities

• Overview: This session is designed for parents and service providers of young children. The causes of common behavior problems will be investigated as well as practical evidence-based strategies to address these behaviors in the home and community. Attendees will learn how to set goals for change and monitor progress towards these goals. Topics to be covered include: noncompliance, sleep problems, lack of independence, tantrums, separation anxiety and toileting issues. Specific case examples will be provided. Participants will be able to identify age appropriate behavioral goals for young children, learn evidence-strategies to reduce common behavior problems in young children, and learn to monitor progress towards goals.

Identification and treatment of pediatric feeding disorders

• Overview: This session is designed for providers and caregivers with children who demonstrate feeding difficulties or challenging behaviors surrounding mealtimes. This presentation will provide an overview of pediatric feeding disorders and evidence based treatment strategies. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the importance of addressing feeding difficulties. Participants will learn to define a pediatric feeding disorder and identify the major underlying causes, become familiar with the prevalence rates of feeding disorders among various populations, be able to identify long term implications of untreated feeding difficulties, and become familiar with behaviorally-based strategies that have been empirically validated.

Inclusive Programming for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

• This training provides practical and evidence-based intervention techniques to maximize the development and success of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) within public education settings. The training includes information on transitioning a student into a new educational setting/class, as well as offers school-based strategies to enhance the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning of students with ASDs. Guidelines to facilitate success with inclusion in general-education settings are also offered.

Redefining consequence for children with disabilities in public school classrooms

David L. Meichenbaum, Ph.D.
Approximate length: 90 minutes

• Overview: This session is designed for educators and related service providers who live/work with a child with a disability who demonstrates recurring challenging behaviors in a public school classroom. This presentation examines how many conventional ways of responding to challenging behavior contribute to its’ persistence. Practical evidence-based strategies to decrease maladaptive behaviors, increase adaptive alternative behaviors, and evaluate the effectiveness of intervention plans will be offered. Attendees will consider whether their current means of responding to challenging behaviors include the necessary elements to build skills and curtail future problematic behaviors. Specific case examples will be provided. Participants will learn to identify the limitation of many conventional school-based behavioral approaches, the practical evidence-based strategies that can reduce problematic behaviors and build adaptive alternative behaviors, and to identify the components needed in developing a comprehensive behavior intervention plan, including means for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of behavior plans.
